Other than events, my other big passion lies in living as eco-friendly life as I can. There are so many things we do in our home life to ensure we are leaving a small footprint on our beautiful earth. In terms of event planning, there are many things we can do to reduce the footprint of special occasions. The added bonus is that many of these ideas will save you time and money in the long run. Winning all round!
Wedding rings are the most symbolic moment of a wedding day. Many couples are now considering buying second hand or estate jewellery. If you spend some time hunting, there are many jewellers that specialise in using recycled metals and ethically sourced stones and the end result is just gorgeous! Think beyond the regular gold and instead choose a wooden ring. Wooden ring I hear you say! These timeless pieces are becoming more popular and are easily sourced throughout Australia utilising some of the timbers Australia is best known for. Added bonus with these companies is that often you will find they plant a tree for every ring sold.
Speaking of the beautiful outdoors…. are you planning a wedding on your own property? Or in an outdoor location that is special for just you two? Planting a tree at the site of your vows is not only helping to offset some of your footprint but is also a special and symbolic moment that creates a lifelong, ever- growing memory of your special day.
Be conscious of every decision you make. When it comes to décor, source second hand items at op shops or check out our range of DIY options. Do you want a gift registry that means you will accumulate more items that may or may not ever be used or would you rather choose a registry that will help you plan your honey moon or give back to a charity you support? Catering is another topic… the food wastage at events is huge! Many venues come with catering already included in packages but if you have the opportunity, consider donating left over food to charities or sourcing caterers from local producers. Make sure you don’t over cater to start with by checking final numbers in the week leading up to the big day.
There are so many ways we can all do a little more to protect our environment in our everyday life. The hints and tips in this blog just scratch the surface of what you can do to create an eco-friendly wedding! Think outside the box and challenge yourself to a minimal footprint eco-friendly wedding – or get in touch and we can help you design and style one to boot! Melanie x
