planning a Cocktail Wedding Everyone will love

Lately we have had the pleasure of coordinating and designing a few Cocktail Weddings. While they have all been incredible weddings there certainly have been a few elements of these that have stood out in both amazing and not so great ways. At each of these weddings we have learnt more about how we can improve our service and what’s required for a successful, enjoyable Cocktail Wedding. This leads me to feel a few extra hints and tips might be worth sharing with you all this month.

Pros of a cocktail wedding

They are more casual and relaxed,

Can create a real party atmosphere

Reduces the need for as many formalities

No need for seating plans and awkward table moments

Cons of a Cocktail Wedding

Not necessarily cheaper

Need for additional furniture

Will older guests be comfortable?

Will everyone be able to see the important elements?

With all this in mind how do you go about planning a Cocktail Wedding everyone will love.

Make sure you have enough seating in a variety of settings. Creating lounge areas provides for a chilled environment. Coupled together with cocktail tables and bar stools and even some larger formal tables for older guests. This ensures that as the evening draws on there are plenty of options to take a break from standing.

Create adequate room for dancing. Set up a dedicated area for dancing by way of a dance floor. This will give your guests who are up for a night of serious partying to do so without interfering with conversations away from the dance floor.

Hire a great band or DJ. Don’t rely on a self-made playlist for a cocktail wedding. Not only will this limit the atmosphere it will also not encourage people to get up and dance. Let alone if something goes wrong with the device or mobile reception isn’t the greatest. Both DJ’s and Bands are experts in engaging with your guests and they will ensure the entire evening is high spirited and fun for all.

Tell your guests what to expect. Obviously share on your invitations it is a cocktail party, however I would also go the extra mile to make sure Grandma and Grandpa know what to expect.

Switch things up a little and start the evening with your formalities such as cake cutting and a few speeches. Then later into the evening (but not too late) invite more speeches and your first dance or family dances. Not only will this break up the event allowing your vendors to have a break it will also mean your cake is cut and taken away for service later.

If the venue allows and there is the space, consider setting up a couple of bar areas. One near to the dance floor the other in the lounge area. This will give your guests the freedom to move around without the big bar ques. Make sure food service continues into the evening and that there is plenty of it. There is nothing worse than Uncle Joe with a belly full of beer and little food.

Hire a great MC. During a cocktail wedding you are going to need an MC with loads of personality. Sometimes this may come in the way of a Band or DJ other people choose a close friend full of life. Remember the best way to bring a cocktail party to life is through the people you choose to bring in as professionals to run the event.

When considering your styling make sure nothing is in the way of where people might walk or place a drink. Don’t have flowers or candles at ground level as they could be a hazard. Instead opt for styling on tables and roof line. The addition of candles in tall vases, clear festoon light and fairy lights creates a whimsical romantic feel to any room. The addition of floral arrangements on the bar, large tables and plinths will add drama and colour to the room.
